Every time I see Sienkiewicz do anything with Thor, he captures this “fury of the storm” characteristic that I just love! I would love to see him paint a full issue of Thor some day.

Bill Sienkiewicz 2003: Broadcast Depth (from The Matrix Comics trade paperback volume 2)

As anyone who has read "The Kid Who Collects Spider-Man" can tell you, a story doesn’t need to be book-length to be considered a truly great story.

So despite the mere 18 pages of story, I consider this story set in the Matrix universe up there with Elektra: Assassin and Stray Toasters. First of all, the way Sienkiewicz uses alternating styles to delineate the Matrix from the real world is so expertly conceived and executed, it surpasses anything that can be done in live action filmmaking.

But the thing that makes this brief story truly great is Sienkiewicz’s story: I don’t want to spoil the plot, but this story has an very emotionally tragic gut-punch arc that deals with the love of children for their parents, a parent for their child, and sweet intentions that have disastrous consequences.

One of Sienkiewicz’s buried treasures.

I. Am. The. New. God. All is one in Darkseid. This mighty body is my church.

When I command your surrender, I speak with three billion voices!

When I make a fist to crush your resistance. It is with three billion hands!

When I stare into your eyes and shatter your dreams. And break your heart. It is with six billion eyes!

Nothing like Darkseid has ever come among you: Nothing will again. I will take you to a hell without exit or end.

And there I will murder your souls!

And make you crawl and beg!

And die!

Die!

Die for Darkseid!

GIVE IN.
DARKSEID IS THE OMEGA OF ALL THINGS. THERE IS NOTHING BUT ANTILIFE IN THE CHURCH OF DARKSEID.

GIVE IN, GIVE YOURSELVES TO DARKSEID. DARKSEID IS THE ONLY TRUTH: DARKSEID IS.

GIVE IN.

DIE! DIE FOR DARKSEID!!
